Grain mixtures

Grain mixtures

Basics

Composition

For budgies, unlike other parakeets, the grain food should contain mainly very small seeds, such as millet.

  • different types of millet (%-70%)
  • Glossy or pointed seed (%-30%)
  • Oat kernels (max. 5%)
  • Oilseeds (max. 5%)
  • other seeds (Dari, Milo, buckwheat, etc.)
  • Grass seed (%-20%)
  • Herb and lettuce seeds
  • (dried herbs)
  • (flowers)

Seed species

Since only very small seeds are interesting for budgies, the quite large protein-rich seeds, such as sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and mung beans, are not mentioned here.

Carbohydrate seedsHigh fat seedsOther seeds

Due to the high content of carbohydrates, these are very rich in energy, but have only a relatively low content of essential amino acids and minerals.

Therefore, grain mixtures containing cereals must not be fed exclusively, as this would lead to health problems sooner or later.

Examples include:

  • Millet
  • Glossy or pointed seed ( = canary seed)
  • Dari
  • Milo
  • Oat kernels
  • Buckwheat

Oilseeds are not too important for the diet of parakeets. However, due to their fat content, these may only make up a maximum of 5% of the grain mixture.

Examples include:

  • Hemp
  • Flaxseed / Chia
  • Kardi
  • Negro Seeds
  • Sesame

These are usually a low-calorie and healthy supplement to the high-carbohydrate and high-fat seeds.

Examples include:

  • Grass seed
  • Wild herb seeds
  • Herb and lettuce seeds

Grains and seeds

Unsuitable seeds

  • Sunflower seeds (too high in calories)
  • Nuts (not suitable for budgies)
  • Hemp (strong breeding instinct/possible aggressive behavior of roosters).
  • Turnip rape (impairs the utilization of iodine)

Undesirable ingredients

Bakery products

Bakery products are by-products and waste products that are generated during the production of bread, pastries, cookies or pasta and usually have a high sugar or fat content.

These can be, for example:

  • Dough scraps
  • Pasta (cooked/uncooked)
  • …..
Eggs and egg products

Egg products are usually by-products or waste products from egg processing.

It is usually not possible to say exactly what is behind this.

Possible examples would be:

  • Eggshells
  • Egg powder of any kind
  • Food from eggs or egg components
  • …..

Animal proteins (e.g. eggs) should generally only be fed in special situations, such as brooding and rearing young. Otherwise, these often cause hens to become broody and roosters to awaken their “spring fever”.

Oils and fats

Additional undefined and possibly also unhealthy oils and fats, which mostly only provide unnecessary calories.

Budgies should only get this, if at all, from the oilseeds in the feed.

Milk and dairy products

Dairy products are usually by-products and waste products from cheese production.

These can be, for example:

  • Whey
  • Milk powder
  • Leftover cheese
  • …..

Dairy products contain lactose (= milk sugar), which cannot be broken down and utilised due to the lack of the enzyme lactase in parakeets and parrots. Too much lactose can thus lead to digestive disorders .

Vegetable protein extracts

Vegetable protein extracts are products that are made from plants and have a protein content of at least 50%. These are mostly a residue from the production of vegetable oils (mostly soy products).

Vegetable by-products or products

Plant by-products are generally waste products of the plant processing industries.

These can be, for example:

  • Peanut shells
  • Wheat bran
  • Beet pulp
  • Molasses
  • Sawdust
  • Straw
  • Roots
  • Awns
  • Vegetable Flours
  • Press residues from oil extraction
  • …..
Animal by-products or products

Animal by-products are parts of animals slaughtered for food production or slaughter by-products.

These can be, for example:

  • Offal
  • Tongue
  • Poultry heads
  • Skins
  • Tendons
  • Feathers, pig bristles
  • Claws, horns, hooves
  • Blood
  • Parts of carcasses that may no longer be used for human consumption
  • ……
Sugar & Honey

Additional sugar that only provides (worthless) calories.

These can be, for example:

  • Sucrose ( = granulated sugar)
  • Glucose ( = dextrose)
  • Dextrose ( = glucose)
  • Dextrin ( = carbohydrate mixture)
  • Fructose ( = fruit sugar)
  • Honey
  • ….

Grain mixtures

Grain mixtures without grass seeds (= “Welli fast food”), I have excluded from the outset, since these represent a malnutrition and have in the long run health problems to result and are thus for me indiscussable.

Declaration of composition

Here it is important to know that the ingredients must normally be listed according to quantity, i.e. what is in first place contains the most and what is in last place contains the least.

If only collective names, such as cereals or seeds, are given, one can usually assume that not necessarily the highest quality , but rather the cheapest ingredients were used.

Examples of declarations that are not very meaningful are:

  • Cereals
  • Seeds
  • Minerals

Examples of meaningful declarations:

  • Canary grass seed, La Plata millet, Silver millet, Manna millet, Japan millet, ….. (grain)
  • Sesame, fennel seed, amaranth, ….. (seeds)
  • Calcium, Phosphorus, Sodium, ….. (minerals)

My recommendations

Here, of course, I can only list grain mixtures that I have tested and fed myself.

This means that other grain mixtures can also be recommended, but I can’t pass judgment on them because I haven’t had a chance to look at them myself yet.

ClausMr. Crumble

Primus Basis

I use this mixture as the main feed.

Primus Basis from Claus
  • 8 different types of millet (60%)
  • Grass seed percentage (10%)
  • Herbs (e.g. chickweed and dandelion)
  • no oilseeds

Composition:

Silver millet, La Plata millet, Japan millet, red millet, Senegal millet, green millet, mohair millet, manna millet, glossy seed, meadow fescue, Pagima Green and cocksfoot, oat kernels, herbs.

Even though the mixture is not quite as varied as that of the grain shack, you can feed this to your budgies as their main food without hesitation. Another particularly positive aspect is the absence of oilseeds, which are rich in energy but rather insignificant in terms of nutrient content.

Product test

Welli – Fit

Due to the lower proportion of grass seed, I use this grain mixture as a supplement to my main feed (or still mix about 50g grass seed / kg under the feed).

Welli-Fit from Mr. Crumble
  • 5 different types of millet (?)
  • Grass seed (?)
  • no oilseeds

Composition:

Millet yellow, millet red, millet white, canary seed, oat kernels, senegal millet, grass seeds, millet green

Product test

Other grain mixtures

Since I was not able to test all grain mixtures myself, they can be partially evaluated only on the basis of the list of their ingredients. I have only listed mixtures that also contain grass seed.

You can often only really judge the ratio of feed ingredients if you can see it directly. After all, if something is in the declaration, you don’t know if you might have to look for it with a magnifying glass.

Wellensittich Vital

BirdBox - Vital
  • Various types of millet
  • Wild seeds (32%)
  • Herbs (5%)

Composition:

Plata millet, silver millet, canary seed, red millet, oat kernels, Herbal mixture, clover seed, chicory seed, perilla seed, Negro seed, linseed, Weed seeds, Hemp seed, Lettuce seeds, Blue poppy, Turnip greens , Grass seed and milk thistle seed

Wellensittich Spezial

  • Various types of millet
  • Wild seeds (40%)

Composition:

Plata millet, silver millet, canary seed, red millet, oat seed, clover seed, chicory seed, perilla seed, negro seed, linseed, weed seed, hemp seed, lettuce seed, blue poppy seed, turnip seed, grass seed and milk thistle seed.

The high proportion of wild seeds (especially weed seeds and lettuce seeds) in both mixtures is consistently positive.

Personally, the proportion of grass seed is too low for me and I would like to see at least 10% of it.

I am skeptical about the use of turnip rape and hemp. Poppy seeds, on the other hand, are rather an exclusion criterion for me personally.

Wellensittichfutter Premium

BirdsAndMore - Premium
  • many different types of millet (56%)
  • various grass seeds (15%)
  • Fonio Paddy (1%)
  • Lettuce and wild herb seeds (3%)
  • Herbs (0.2%)

Composition:

Glossy seed, panicle millet (silver, plata, yellow, green, red), Japanese millet, bristle millet (manna, senegal, mohair), grass seed (knaul, fescue, willow), yellow panicle millet, Lettuce seeds, fonio, clover seeds, amaranth seeds, thyme, oregano.

This mixture contains not only a fairly high proportion of grass seed, but also lettuce and wild herb seed. Special mention should be made of the addition of Fonio Paddy, which has many amino acids.

Wellensittichfutter Auslese

Birds and more - Auslese
  • many different types of millet (66%)
  • various grass seeds (12%)
  • Lettuce seeds (1%)

Composition:

Glossy seed, panicle millet (silver, plata, yellow, green, red), Japanese millet, bristle millet (manna, senegal, mohair), grass seed (knaul, fescue, willow), lettuce seed, oat kernels.

This mixture has a higher content of millet (= higher in calories) and a lower content of grass seeds. In contrast to the premium mix, this one contains no wild herb seeds and no Fonio Paddy.

Wellensittichfutter Multi-Traum

  • many different types of millet (65%)
  • various grass seeds (6%)
  • (Wild) herb seeds (approx. 2%)
  • Herbs (0.6%)

Composition:

Spitz seed, panicle millet (silver, plata, yellow, green, red), Japan millet, bristle millet (manna, senegal, mohair), grass seed (Knaul, fescue, pasture), naked oat, spinach seed, parsley seed, thyme, parsley, chickweed, fennel seeds, chicory seeds, flax seeds, chia seeds, Gold of Pleasure, clover seeds, hulled buckwheat, parsnip seeds, amaranth seeds.

This mixture has a high content of millet ( = higher in calories) and in return the lowest content of grass and herb seeds so far. Unlike the Premium blend, this one does not contain Fonio Paddy.

I find “Gold of Pleasure” (gold of pleasure) rather unsuitable, as this is actually used for breeding and brooding due to its high protein content.

Wellensittichfutter Grasland

  • nine different types of millet (68%)
  • many different grass seeds (7%)
  • Wild seeds (2%)

Composition:

various types of millet, cheatgrass, oat kernels, seeds of knotweed and plantain, ryegrass, ryegrass, fescue grass, cocksfoot, timothy grass and meadow grass seeds

This blend, unlike thePremium blend, has a higher content of millet and a lower content of grass seed in return, which is somewhat surprising given the name. In addition, this also does not contain Fonio Paddy.

Wellensittichfutter-Diät

  • many different types of millet (57%)
  • Grass seed (20%)
  • no oilseeds
  • Herbs

Composition:

Panicle millet (silver, plata, yellow, red, green), bristle millet (manna, senegal, mohair), lacy seed, Japan millet, grass seed (knaul, willow, ray, fescue, timothy), buckwheat, amaranth seed, herb mixture.

Due to the high proportion of grass seeds and the absence of oil seeds, this is a fairly low-calorie mixture, which is probably why it is also declared as a diet feed. Unlike the premium blend, this one contains no wild herb seeds and no Fonio Paddy.

Wiesentraum-Mischung

Körnerbude - Wiesentraum
  • high percentage of various grass seeds (10)
  • many different kinds of millet (11)
  • many different (wild) herb seeds (10)
  • Eucalyptus leaves
  • Herbal mixture to support plumage formation (moult)

Composition:

Red fescue, meadowgrass, cocksfoot, smooth oat, golden oat, meadow fescue, meadow foxtail, tall fescue, German ryegrass, timothy, glossy seed, mohair millet, green millet, yellow millet, genuine La Plata millet, Japan millet, Senegal millet, silver millet, Teff dwarf millet, red millet, Moroccan millet, manna millet, dill, fennel, caraway, wild carrot, parsley, ribwort, lesser meadow-herb, yarrow, common parsnip, wild chicory, Lavender flowers / eucalyptus, herbs molt support (nettle, field horsetail, chickweed, dandelion).

After the budgie moults more or less throughout the year (approx. 9 months), the herbal mixture included is clearly an important bonus. In addition, unlike the commercially available products, this one provides the nutrients that are really needed, such as silicic acid, minerals and sulphurous amino acids.

I am only a little sceptical about the lavender flowers, but these are only contained in a negligible amount, so they do not really pose a problem with regard to the essential oils.

Jehl Wellensittich Australien

Körnerbude - Australien
  • Various types of millet
  • Meadow grasses
  • Fonio Paddy (many amino acids)
  • Lettuce seeds
  • Wild herb seeds
  • Eucalyptus leaves

Composition:

Bristle millet (tricolor mohair millet, manna millet and Senegal millet), panicle millet (silver millet, plata millet, Heubecks millet mix), gloss seed, meadow grasses premium, Japan millet, golden millet hulled, lettuce seed, fonio paddy, clover seed, amaranth seed, eucalyptus leaves, orange blossom leaves.

Jehl-Wellensittich-Australia is a lower fat grain mix and contains a good, if not quite as diverse, range of ingredients.

I only find it a pity that some ingredients, such as “Heubecks Hirsemix” and “Wiesengräser Premium” were not specified in more detail and you don’t really know what is behind them.

Welli-Mix 1

Körnerwerkstatt - Welli-Mix 1
  • Various types of millet
  • Wild seeds
  • Grasses

Composition:

Various millet varieties, wild seed mix, grasses, oats, Canary seed.

From the photo, it could be a promising blend. Unfortunately, however, there is no information about the varieties of millet, wild seeds and grasses used, nor about their number.

Welli-Mix 2

  • one or more millet variety(ies)
  • Wild seeds
  • Grasses
  • Herbs & Blossoms

Composition:

Millet, grasses, oats, amaranth, red clover, nettle seeds, herbs, flowers, amaranth popped, rosehip hulls, canary seed.

It could be quite an interesting mix under some circumstances. Unfortunately, however, there is no information about the varieties of millet, herbs and grasses used, nor about their number.

I am rather sceptical about the use of rose hip peels, as they are recommended in the literature for larger parakeets and parrots, but not for budgies.

Since these feed mixtures contain significantly less millet, it is essential to adjust the feed quantity accordingly.

Wellensittiche Kräutervielfalt (new mixture)

This higher-priced mixture gives as a change, e.g. on Sundays or if the “small ones” were times particularly well behaved. 😉

Mixerama - Kräutervielfalt

  • 6 different types of millet
  • various grass seeds (19%)
  • many different vegetable and wild herb seeds
  • many herbs (8.3%) & flowers (1.2%)
  • Eucalyptus leaves

Composition:

Grassamen, Platahirse, rote Hirse, Mannahirse, Silberhirse, Japanhirse, Senegalhirse, Spinatsamen, Kanariensaat, Karottensamen, Fenchelsamen, Delicha, Pagima Green, Nigersaat, Vogelknöterich, Brennnesselsamen, Basilikumsamen, Brennnesselblätter, Oregano, Majoran, Amaranth, Thymian, Kamillenblüten, Eukalyptusblätter, Petersiliensamen, Kümmelsamen, Dillsamen, Chiasaat, Anis, Rosmarin, Löwenzahn, Sonnenblumenblüten

This mixture contains less millet and a high proportion of grasses instead, as well as a variety of herbs and herb seeds. Eucalyptus leaves are also included.

Wellensittiche Sensitiv (Megabakterien)

Mixerama - Sensitiv
  • 4 different types of millet
  • various grass seeds (35%)
  • Fonio Paddy
  • many different vegetable and wild herb seeds
  • Herbs (1.1%) & flowers (1%)
  • suitable for macrorhabdiosis (mega bacteria) or digestive problems

Composition:

Grass seed, canary seed, manna millet, silver millet, naked oat, green millet, Japan millet, fennel seed, timothy grass, delicha, pagima green, clover seed, carrot seed, Niger seedspinach seed, lettuce seed, chia seed, anise, fonio paddy, chamomile flower, caraway seed, milk thistle seed, basil seed, sesame seed, flax seed, thyme, oregano, dill seed, bird’s knotweed.

This mixture is designed for budgies with digestive problems or macrorhabdiosis (mega bacteria or going light syndrome) and consists of small-grained and easily digestible seeds.

Wellensittiche Energie Plus (Außenhaltung)

Mixerama - Energie Plus
  • 5 different types of millet
  • Grass seed (11%)
  • Fonio Paddy
  • Various seeds & wild seeds
  • Suitable for outdoor keeping

Composition:

Plata millet, silver millet, red millet, manna millet, senegal millet, canary seed, Grass seed , naked oat, Japan millet, Delicha, Pagima Green, spinach seed, carrot seed, basil seed, fennel seed, Niger seed, Fonio Paddy, wild seed.

The mixture is designed for budgies kept outdoors, but can also be given as a digestible peppermint food in case of illness.

Wellensittiche Australien (low calorie)

Mixerama - Australien
  • 5 different types of millet
  • Grass seed (37%)
  • Fonio Paddy
  • Various seeds & wild seeds
  • Herbs (2%) & flowers (1%)
  • suitable for overweight budgies

Composition:

Grass seed, senegal millet, silver millet, spinach seed, lettuce seed, sesame seed, plata millet, green millet, Japan millet, nettle seed, carrot seed, delicha, pagima green, niger seed, canary seed, naked oat, amaranth, anise, fennel seed, milk thistle seed, basil seed, dill seed, chia seed, fonio paddy, thyme, oregano, daisies, chamomile flowers.

This mixture is especially suitablefor overweight budgies that need to lose weight, due to the high proportion of grass seeds (low in calories).

Wellensittich 2

  • different kinds of millet (5)
  • Grass seed

Composition:

Glossy seed, yellow millet, white millet, Japan millet, red millet, oat seed, red senegal, niger seed, dehulled millet, gloss dehulled, spinach seed, hemp, turnip, grass seed, linseed, evening primrose, perilla, fennel, cardi, pine seed, poppy, milo, sesame, buckwheat, perilla light, and others.

With some of the ingredients, it is not entirely clear to me why they are included in a budgie mix at all. In addition, I have noticed that some of these, such as gloss seed, are duplicated (normal/destemmed). Since no percentages are available, the many high-calorie seeds, such as oilseeds, could possibly pose a problem.

I am skeptical about the use of turnip rape and hemp. Poppy seeds, on the other hand, are rather an exclusion criterion for me personally.

Kräuterapotheke Wellensittich

  • different kinds of millet (7)
  • Grass seed
  • Vegetable seeds
  • Wild fruits
  • many herbs and also flowers

Composition:

Gloss, silver millet, yellow millet, Japan millet, oat kernels, mohar millet, Senegal millet red, Senegal millet yellow, red millet, Finch panicum, niger seed, quinoa, amaranth, alfalfa, gloss entspeltzt, linseed, turnip, evening primrose, grass seed, spinach seed, radish seed, buckwheat, cardi, pine seed, poppy seed, in addition barberry, sea buckthorn, chickweed, nettle herb, shepherd’s purse, dandelion herb, yarrow herb, true chamomile flowers, daisies, licorice rasps.

The different types of millet are positive, but unfortunately no statements are made about the grasses used. After no percentages are available, the many high-calorie seeds included could possibly be a problem.

I could not find any information about “Finch panicum” and I am skeptical about the use of turnips. Poppy seeds and licorice shavings are rather a criterion for exclusion for me personally.

SiMa – Grasmischung

  • 9 different types of millet (68%)
  • Grass seed (7%)
  • Herb seeds (2%)

Composition:

9 vers. Millet varieties (68%), cheatgrass (19.8%), grass seed [cocksfoot, ryegrass, ryegrass, fescue grass, timothy grass, and switchgrass seed] (7%), oat kernels (3%), Seeds of knotweed and plantain (2%)

Positive about this mixture is the proportion of wild herb seeds and the absence of oil seeds. With 7% of grass seed is somewhat low. somewhat low.

Commercial feed

Unfortunately, many well-known brands tend to keep the composition of their products very general, so you often don’t know what specifically is in them.

It is then impossible to determine the extent to which cheap, low-quality or high-quality ingredients are contained.

Often, additional vitamins are added to the products, which is not always positive. This is often intended to compensate for vitamin and trace element deficiencies caused by inferior or missing ingredients.
